The Way Forward for CSR in Singapore

Mdm Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament, Singapore spoke about the need for social innovation at the 5th International Singapore Compact CSR Summit opening ceremony.

In its 5th year, the annual International Singapore Compact CSR Summit highlights the growth of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Singapore over the years and looks at the way forward. Organised by the Singapore Compact for CSR, this year’s summit saw over 460 delegates and guests coming together to learn and share ideas and experiences on CSR.

Here are three messages from the summit, which we feel is important in shaping the way forward for CSR in Singapore:

1. Explore beyond CSR to social innovations

In her opening speech, Madam Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament, said that it is heartening to see the growth of CSR in Singapore, where there is now growing awareness of CSR among companies, and it is almost a given for companies to have in place corporate philanthropy and volunteerism programmes to give back to society. Communication of CSR through Social Media

Are you planning to use social media to communicate your company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy and activities? What are some things to take note of when using social media for CSR?

This article shares our thoughts on the communication of CSR through social media, which we presented at last week’s International Singapore Compact CSR Summit 2012.

The International Singapore Compact CSR Summit 2012 was held in Singapore from 27 – 28 Sep with over 400 business leaders, CSR practitioners, government officials, academics, students and non-governmental organisations coming together to share and discuss trends, threats and opportunities for CSR. This annual event, in its 4th year, is organised by the Singapore Compact for CSR – a national body promoting CSR in Singapore.

In our presentation, we outlined the social media landscape and shared 3 main points for companies and organisations to keep in mind when using social media for CSR: Listen and Understand, Tell Stories and Share, and Engage and Be Transparent. Read more

Singapore to Host Regional Network to Promote CSR in ASEAN

A new initiative, the ASEAN Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Network, will be set up to push the growth of CSR, a concept fast taking hold in the international business world, in this region.

Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Zainul Abideen Rashid, will officiate at the incorporation of the ASEAN CSR Network on 11 January 2011.

The Network will have five founding members, and the ASEAN Foundation:

  • Indonesia – Indonesia Business Links
  • Malaysia – International Chamber of Commerce
  • Philippines – League of Corporate Foundations
  • Singapore – Singapore Compact for CSR
  • Thailand – the CSR Club of the Thai Listed Companies Association
  • ASEAN Foundation

The Network expects Brunei and Vietnam to become members too. The Network was registered on 8 December 2010 as a company limited by guarantee in Singapore.

The Network’s Secretariat will be based in Singapore. Singapore Compact for CSR, a tripartite body charged with promoting CSR in Singapore, will be its initial host and implement various activities to implement the action plan. Read more
